The history of Matsusaka Cotton dates back to the latter half of the 5th century, when a group of weavers arrived from the continent and settled in the eastern part of Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture. They introduced advanced textile techniques to Japan for the first time, establishing this region as a major center of ancient Japanese weaving.
In 698, the clan was officially recognized by Emperor Monmu, and the tradition of offering woven textiles to Ise Grand Shrine has continued to this day.
Characterized by striped patterns woven with indigo-dyed yarn. By the Edo period, it had become deeply woven into everyday culture — stripes that appear as solid from a distance, yet reveal intricate patterns up close. This quiet elegance captivated the people of Edo. That kabuki actors wearing striped garments are still said to be "wearing Matsusaka" speaks to the enduring popularity it once held.
At omotodenim, we have partnered with Itoori Textile, the keeper of this craft and tradition. Designed as modern garments that honor the inherent character of the traditional "Matsusaka-jima" fabric — without compromising what makes it exceptional.
